German 110
|
Fall 2003 German 110 is a language course that
introduces the fundamental elements of German. The course requires no previous German. The goal of this course is to develop the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a cultural context with a focus on spoken German. By the end of the term you will be able to: v Read
a variety of short German texts with relative ease, and summarize them. v Ask
and answer questions in German. v Express
your own thoughts and ideas in short conversations. v Converse
comfortably on a variety of everyday topics such as weather, hobbies,
personal interests, and college life. v Gain
a greater understanding of the many facets of culture in German-speaking
countries. Apply basic grammatical concepts. The program Kontakte (4rd edition) includes a textbook (Lehrbuch),
a workbook (Arbeitsbuch) and CD Roms. A German-English/English
German dictionary is highly recommended. Homework is assigned in each class and
includes grammar and vocabulary exercises, short compositions, simple reading
material and listening comprehension exercises in the lab manual/workbook.
All assignments have to be completed and handed in on time. The short
compositions must be typed (double-spaced, with a 12- point font). No electronic submissions are
accepted. Late submissions of assignments will result in a lower grade (one
grade lower per extra day). Should you have to miss class,
please let me know beforehand and put written assignment in my mailbox in Van
Meter (NOT in campus mail). Workbook exercises need to be completed before each chapter test (see other side for schedule) and are part of the final grade. These exercises include grammar and listening comprehension exercises. The necessary audio files can be downloaded under: www.goucher.edu/thormann. FOLDER ------- LOGIN --------- PASSWORD German ----- german ---- munchen2003 Note that these are case sensitive, so no capital letters please! Tests are given at the end of each
chapter and cannot be rescheduled (see other side for schedule). While a
chapter test typically covers the material of just one chapter, our course
builds on the cumulative acquisition of language skills. Therefore, you are
responsible for all previously covered vocabulary and grammar. Please expect
occasional vocabulary and grammar quizzes;
they are part of the final grade. Attendance is crucial for a language class.
Each student is allowed a maximum of 4 absences from class per semester. For
each additional absence, two percentage points will be subtracted from the final
grade. If you must miss a class due to unforeseen reasons, religious
holidays, etc. please inform me by email before
class. You are responsible for knowing
the material presented on a given day, even
if you are not present in class that day. Please contact a fellow student for
that information, assignments, etc. Please contact me if you have any questions, and ACE when you feel the need for extra practice, support before tests, etc. Final grade 1. Class attendance, participation, speaking
ability 20% 2. Oral and written homework; compositions 20% 3. Final exam (written) 20% 4. Chapter tests 30% 5. Vocabulary and grammar quizzes 10% Looking ahead and
